Current Exhibitions:
  • MERKUR (until February 28, 2010)
This exhibition introduces visitors to legendary Czech manufacturers of Meccano (metal construction kits) from the period after World War I. Jaroslav Vancl, the father of the Merkur Meccano, is as a great name in the field of children’s construction kits as are such luminaries as Křižík, Kolben and Ressel in the field of science. The exhibition is entitled “MERKUR” although there were three other examples of these toys – EDISON from Roudnice, VAŠEK from Prague and TRIX from Volary – all created by similarly brilliant minds. However, MERKUR was lucky to survive all the unfortunate years of the war, and especially the period after the war, perhaps thanks to coincidence or perhaps thanks to the fact that it had a more timeless concept and therefore had a better chance of survival. The display, part of which is a playroom for visitors of all age groups, will present models amassed by the collector Jiří Mládek.
  • JAN VANĚK /1891–1962/. Civilized Housing for Everybody (February 23 – August 15, 2010)
Original housing advertisements, the concept of modern housing in Czechoslovakia’s First Republic and the quality and timelessness of furniture, the making of which was connected with Jan Vaněk, an architect, theoretician, publicist, publisher, teacher, entrepreneur and prominent pioneer of modern trends in the field of interior creation.

the Müller Villa

(Müllerova vila)

A national heritage site

The world-renowned work of the prominent avant-garde architect Adolf Loos (1870–1933).

One of the most important monuments in the Functionalist style not only in the Czech Republic, but worldwide. Built for First Republic businessman Ing. Dr. František Müller, the villa was designed by Adolf Loos (1870-1933), an Austrian of Czech descent. The most important legacy of his work is the concept of Raumplan - the partition of internal residential space into a system of vertical levels that fully respected the purposes of particular rooms. These principles were implemented to the full in the Müller Villa, which is generally regarded as Loos' masterpiece

THE PODSKALÍ CUSTOMS HOUSE AT VÝTOŇ

(Podskalská celnice na Výtoni)

The customs house building at Výtoň was bought by the New Town in 1561 for the purposes of collecting tolls from wood floated down the river. It is a 16th century Gothic building with a timber-framed upper floor. The taxation rights of the New Town are still recalled by the New Town arms of 1671 above the entrance. In 1833 the house was sold to a private owner and over time became the famous inn "U Koppů", which together with the nearby inn "U Hejduků" was the main focal point for river sailors and rafters in Prague. At the time that old Podskalí disappeared it was possible to save the historic building, but with the loss of its natural customer base the inn began to slide and the house gradually fell into ruin, amongst other things due to the raising of the surrounding terrain. As early as at the beginning of the 20th century a "Podskalí Museum" was considered for the site, and in 1939 the town gave the former Customs House into the care of the City of Prague Museum. The first exposition was opened here in 1947, and new installations followed in 1960, 1966 and 1989. As late as during the 1970's the house was partially residential. Today, the Customs House and a nearby oasis of buildings are all that remains of old Podskalí.

INVITATION TO MUSEUM KAMPA
Special atmosphere, uniqueness of art collection, spirit of an avant-garde world.

SOVA'S MILL
Museum Kampa owes its existence to the well-known Czech-American art lover, Mrs. Mladek, and the fulfillment of her vision to transform the historical Sova Mill complex into a museum for Central European modern art, which could publicly exhibit and preserve her bequest to the city of Prague of the unique art collection that she and her late husband, Jan Mladek, collected over their lifetime. Jan and Meda Mladek believed that culture is the basis for a nation's survival. For many years they supported and promoted artists who were persecuted, exiled or driven underground during the communist era. They were active, knowledgeable and enthusiastic collectors, assembling a comprehensive art collection for posterity, which opened to the public in 2003 in the unforgettable setting of the newly restored landmark Sova Mill, located on the bank of the Vltava River in Kampa Park.

PERMANENT COLLECTION

  • František Kupka /1871 - 1957/ - The František Kupka exposition in Museum Kampa represents one of the largest and most famous collections of this great pioneer of modern art. The collection, which amounts to more than 200 pieces, covers works from his time as a student to his later abstract period
  • Otto Gutfreund /1889 - 1927/ - Museum Kampa is home to artworks by this famous Czech sculptor of the 20th century. Several of his sculptures are displayed in the museum, including his bronze cubistic pieces.
  • Modern Central European Art - This unique collection includes hundreds of paintings, sculptures, drawings, and graphics by prominent Czech, Slovak, Polish, Hungarian and Yugoslavian artists. The collection has been assembled since the 1960's by the founder of the museum Meda Mládek along with her late husband Jan Mládek. Due to their collecting activities they were able to support artists who were oppressed by the communist regime.
